Town Council has established new committees to ensure that citizen input is reflected in the implementation of its strategic plan. Serving on a municipal committee is an excellent way to get involved and make a meaningful difference in your community.

Objectives

  • Contribute to advancing the Town’s priorities
  • Provide advisory support to the Council
  • Discuss issues and analyze files
  • Propose ideas, actions, and examples
  • Issue recommendations to support decision-making

Committee structure

8 to 10 members, including an elected official who chairs the committee and a Town employee acting as an observer. A quorum of 5 people is required for meetings. Members serve a two-year term, renewable once. The list of selected members for each committee will be adopted by public resolution and published on the Town’s website.

Applications

Ideal candidates should have knowledge, experience, expertise, or a strong interest in the field, as well as a collaborative spirit, good listening skills, and respect for others. Those wishing to volunteer for committee positions must submit a cover letter outlining their background and relevant experience (a resume is optional). A selection committee comprised of members of the municipal council and director general will meet to elect committee members. Members will be covered by insurance during meetings.

Operations

Each committee determines the frequency of its meetings (from 4 to 10 per year). The meeting schedule will be made public. The committees’ recommendations will be made public, and the elected official responsible for the committees will report on the committees’ progress at municipal council meetings.

Interested citizens can apply on the Town website between February 24 and March 27. The committee members will be appointed in April, and their work will begin later in the spring.

New citizens committees in Montreal West

Chaired by the mayor, this roundtable brings together local community organizations that serve the Montreal West area. Designated representatives meet two or three times per year to discuss their missions, share their challenges, and exchange with the Town.

This committee examines revenue diversification, municipal taxation, and strategies to strengthen Montreal West's financial health.

This committee supports the Town in its adaptation to climate change and proposes the implementation of environmental measures and public awareness activities.

This committee is responsible for updating and implementing the Age-Friendly Policy to encourage the participation and active aging of seniors within the community. It reflects the Town’s commitment to making Montreal West a better, safer, and more inclusive town for residents of all ages.

This committee proposes ways to enhance the commercial offering, showcase the area, and increase the overall appeal of Westminster Avenue. Property owners and merchants will join residents to discuss community events, beautification projects, and financial and regulatory measures aimed at strengthening the heart of the town.

This committee recommends measures to support the safe coexistence of all modes of transportation (pedestrians, cyclists, vehicles, and trains) and to promote an efficient, safe, equitable, and environmentally responsible transportation system, which will include signage, parking, and the use of public space.

Interested in joining a committee? Fill out the form below and include a cover letter outlining your background and relevant experience (a resume is optional).

Deadline to apply: March 27 at noon

The advisory committees in Montreal West support the work of the Town Council. Each is composed of Town residents and chaired by one of the four councillors.

Seniors Advisory Committee

The Town of Montreal West’s Senior Advisory Committee was created to oversee the implementation of the MADA 2020-2025 action plan. Its main objective is to improve the living environment of seniors residing in the municipality. By aligning itself with the principles of the Municipalité Amie des Aînés (MADA), the town aims to offer an adapted and inclusive environment that promotes the well-being and active participation of seniors in community life. In this way, the Committee acts as a driving force for change, facilitating the coordination of initiatives and resources to meet the specific needs of this population.

Environmental Action Committee

The Montreal West Environmental Action Committee is a standing advisory committee of Council. It is invested in making the town a more sustainable and environmentally friendly community. The committee was set up with the understanding that towns and citizens need to come together in order to work as responsible actors due to the rapid decline of our global ecology. Through education, action, and policy change, it is committed to making Montreal West a greener neighbourhood. Some of the specific issues dealt with by the committee include: waste management, recycling, composting, pesticide use, energy conservation, and Meadowbrook preservation.

Community Safety Committee

The Town’s Community Safety Committee (CSC), composed primarily of residents from the Town, meets to discuss issues relating to public safety (including, but not limited to, traffic concerns).

Please note that any matters specific to traffic concerns (e.g. speed bumps, street signs, parking, directional change) must be submitted in writing at Town Hall, to the attention of Lieutenant Demetrios Georgiou (Public Security). Where necessary, Lieutenant Georgiou will submit his recommendations to the TSC and the TSC will then submit its final recommendation (if any) to Town Council for decision. Any other public safety matters (e.g. theft, graffiti, CPR) should also be sent in writing to the attention of Lieutenant Georgiou. This process will allow us to thoughtfully consider all concerns raised or proposals submitted by residents.

Planning Advisory Committee

The Planning Advisory Committee (PAC) is entrusted with the review of all building projects subject to the Town’s Site Planning and Architectural Integration Program (SPAIP). The projects concerned are, among others, those that aim to modify the exterior appearance of any building within the Town’s boundaries. The PAC formulates recommendations that are transferred to the Town Council for approval.

In addition, the PAC also reviews minor exemption requests and proposed amendments to the various urban planning by-laws. The Town Council may also, at its discretion, give other mandates to the Committee.

The PAC meets once or twice a month.
