The Town wishes to inform residents about the progress of the safety improvement project at the Westminster level crossing.
Following the presentation of the proposed measures to residents last year, the Town has continued the steps required to move the project forward. After several calls for tenders to secure a qualified contractor, the contract was ultimately awarded to Uniroc Construction Inc. at the regular Council meeting held on February 23, 2026.
About the work
To minimize disruptions, the work will take place overnight after the school year and is expected to last approximately one week.
Schedule
- from July 5 to 11, 2026*
- from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Temporary impacts during work
- Westminster Ave will be closed overnight between Milner Ave and Ainslie Rd. The road will be open during the day.
- A detour will direct traffic to the Elmhurst level crossing during the closure
- Motorists are asked to follow detour signage when in effect
- Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained at all times
Project purpose
The main objective is to bring the crossing into compliance with Transport Canada requirements. These improvements will also enhance safety and traffic flow for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and public commuters, in an area recognized for its complexity and high activity.
Reminder of planned improvements
The planned measures include the following:
- Left turns will no longer be permitted:
- From Sherbrooke St onto Westminster Ave
- From Broughton Rd onto Westminster Ave
- Removal of parking on Westminster between Milner Ave and Sherbrooke St. The southbound parking lane will be converted into a travel lane. Reminder: parking is permitted for up to 2 hours in the municipal lots on Milner/Strathearn and Milner/Percival.
- Only one traffic lane will remain in each direction between Sherbrooke St and Broughton Rd
- Stop signs will be removed on Westminster Ave at Sherbrooke St and Broughton Rd
- New rectangular rapid-flashing beacons will be installed at pedestrian crossings
- Flower boxes will be added to help improve pedestrian safety and visibility
