Many older adults want to stay in their homes as they age. Age-proofing the home becomes key to prevent falls and other accidents. Here are a few simple tips to age-proof your house:

  • Remove tripping hazards
  • Reduce or eliminate stairs
  • Create a well-lit home
  • Install a grab bar and have a non-slip surface in the tub or shower.
  • Remove furniture that is loose or wobbly
  • Use an emergency personal response system with a call button allowing you to call for help at any time

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation has created a guide designed for seniors that identifies difficulties seniors can experience in the home and describes adaptations to overcome these difficulties.
