The Town wishes to inform residents about the progress of the safety improvement project at the Westminster level crossing.
Following the presentation of the proposed measures to residents last year, the Town has continued the steps required to move the project forward. After several calls for tenders to secure a qualified contractor, the contract was ultimately awarded to Uniroc Construction Inc. at the regular Council meeting held on February 23, 2026.
Anticipated work period
The work is planned to take place between June 30 and August 31, 2026, and is expected to last approximately one week. In order to reduce impacts on traffic:
- Work is scheduled after the end of the school year
- Work is expected to be carried out overnight, between 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
At this time, some construction details, including the precise timeline and specific on-site impacts, are still being finalized with the contractor. The Town will share this information with residents as soon as it is confirmed.
Project purpose
These transitional measures are intended to improve safety and traffic flow for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and public commuters, in an area recognized for its complexity and high activity.
Reminder of planned improvements
The planned measures include the following:
- Prohibition of left turns from Sherbrooke Street to Westminster Avenue
- Removal of one traffic lane in each direction on Westminster Avenue between Sherbrooke Street and Broughton Road
- Prohibition of left turns from Broughton Road to Westminster Avenue (except for STM buses)
- Conversion of the southbound parking lane between Milner Avenue and Shebrooke Street into a traffic lane
- Removal of the stop signs on Westminster at the Sherbrooke Street intersection and at the corner of Broughton Road
- Addition of rectangular rapid-flashing beacons at pedestrian crossings
- Installation of flower boxes to improve safety at pedestrian crossings
Next steps
More detailed information regarding the work, temporary impacts, and mitigation measures will be shared once the schedule has been confirmed.
