Earth Day: the importance of our urban canopy

In recognition of Earth Day, let’s take a moment to reflect on the vital role trees play in our urban environments. They help cool our cities by reducing heat islands, improve air quality, absorb rainwater, and provide much‑needed shade and habitat for wildlife.

The Town actively strengthens its urban canopy through its public tree planting program and its Tree Give Away initiative, helping to green public and private spaces across the community. With final preparations underway, trees will be planted in late May and early June.

Most of the trees planted are native species, carefully selected to support local biodiversity and thrive in our climate. A non‑native species, the ginkgo, is also used strategically, thanks to its exceptional resistance to urban conditions.
