{"id":83018,"date":"2024-10-09T16:29:58","date_gmt":"2024-10-09T20:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/montreal-west.ca\/?p=83018"},"modified":"2024-10-09T16:29:59","modified_gmt":"2024-10-09T20:29:59","slug":"fire-prevention-week-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/montreal-ouest.ca\/en\/fire-prevention-week-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Fire Prevention Week 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This year\u2019s Fire prevention week is taking place from <strong>October 6 to October 12, 2024<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Every year in Quebec, fires cause on average:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Damage to 13 homes each day<\/li>\n<li>Injury to 308 people\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Evacuation of 27,000 people\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nearly <strong>48% of fires <\/strong>in homes are linked to a<strong> distraction or human error. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The inadequate use of electrical appliances and poor maintenance of your systems may cause a fire. Electrical equipment and electrical distribution equipment are the main source of heat in over 23% of damaged residential buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Among victims of residential fires, <strong>66% are over 60 years old. <\/strong>If you are a senior citizen or the loved one of a senior citizen, please be particularly vigilant.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing about and adopting safe behaviors helps improve the safety of all residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Multi-socket connection<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you use a multi-socket connection, make sure that it is equipped with power surge protection, in order to avoid a power surge in the electrical supply system. The presence of a red cut-off button is a good indicator of a power surge protection. What\u2019s more, in case of a power outage, this feature protects your electrical appliances. Only use low-energy consumption devices with such multi-socket connections.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do NOT plug the following devices or appliances in a multi-socket connection:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Large appliances: refrigerator, dryer, dishwasher, oven\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Small appliances: microwave, coffee machine, mixer, toaster, slow cooker\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Hair styling appliances: flat iron, curling iron, blow dryer\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Space heaters<\/li>\n<li>Other multi-socket connections, extension cords<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Rechargeable devices <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Several devices used daily are rechargeable:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cell phone<\/li>\n<li>Laptop computer or tablet<\/li>\n<li>Smartwatch<\/li>\n<li>Robot (for example: a robot vacuum cleaner)<\/li>\n<li>Electric bike or kick scooter<\/li>\n<li>Vaping device<\/li>\n<li>Wireless drill, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>To avoid a fire started by a rechargeable device: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Comply with the manufacturer\u2019s instructions carefully at all times.<\/li>\n<li>Recharge your device in a safe location, away from flammable materials.<\/li>\n<li>Observe the maximum charging time (for example, by setting a timer).<\/li>\n<li>Use the charger provided with your device, or an approved battery charger.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid exposing the charger to water, intense heat or intense cold.<\/li>\n<li>Do not modify or otherwise tamper with the charger.<\/li>\n<li>Check the charger regularly for damage.<\/li>\n<li>Dispose of batteries at a drop-off location or at the ecocentre. Never throw them in the trash or in the recycling bins, as they could start a fire when they are crushed during the collection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Electric heating appliances<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>To use electric heating safely: \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Choose CSA\/ULC certified appliances and comply with the manufacturer\u2019s instructions.<\/li>\n<li>Keep wall-mounted heaters at least 15 centimetres away from flammable materials.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that space heaters have the automatic shut-off feature and that they are installed at least 1 metre away from any flammable materials. \u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Never modify or tamper with electric devices. \u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>10 fire prevention tips<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Smoke alarms:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Install one smoke alarm per floor, including in the basement.<\/li>\n<li>Opt for a photoelectric smoke alarm, in order to reduce the risk of false alarms.<\/li>\n<li>Replace it on or before the date indicated by the manufacturer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Fire escape plan:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify two possible exits.<\/li>\n<li>Identify a meeting point outdoors and let all occupants know where it is.<\/li>\n<li>Run through the entire fire escape plan with all occupants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>How to evacuate your residence:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shut all doors behind you in order to prevent smoke or flames from spreading to other rooms or dwellings.<\/li>\n<li>Dial 9-1-1 once you have made your way outside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Smoker\u2019s items:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not dispose of cigarette butts in flowerpots or in mulch.<\/li>\n<li>Dispose of cigarette butts in metal containers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Heat source: <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep curtains and furniture at least 10 cm away from radiators, baseboards or any other heat source.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Electricity: <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have the electricity in your home installed by a certified electrician.<\/li>\n<li>Use electric appliances that are certified in Canada and that are marked with the CSA and ULC acronyms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Carbon Monoxide: <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Install a carbon monoxide detector if you have a garage connected to your residence, or if you use fuel-burning heating or cooking appliances.<\/li>\n<li>Comply with the carbon monoxide detector manufacturer\u2019s specifications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Cooking fire prevention: <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always keep an eye on food that is cooking and use a timer.<\/li>\n<li>Never heat oil in a pot for frying, regardless of the type of pot. Use only fryers that are equipped with a thermostat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>Chimney cleaning: <\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Have your chimney cleaned yearly by an expert, before you need to start heating your home. The same applies to the vent pipes connected to pellet stoves.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Hot ashes:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Let all hot ashes cool outdoors, in a metal container covered with a metal lid.<\/li>\n<li>Wait at least seven days before disposing of the ashes in a garbage bin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This year\u2019s Fire prevention week is taking place from October 6 to October 12, 2024.
